There's only a few more weeks left of summer, but still enough time to get in one more book.
Below are some recommended summer reads for both men and women, although the division between the books is somewhat arbitrary. Men and women would find spiritual encouragement from both lists. Other recommended books and resources can be found on our online bookstore.
Books for Men
I once heard John MacArthur say The Conviction to Lead is the leadership book he wished he'd written. Half-way through the book, I can see why. Convictional leadership is the essence of what it means to be a leader in the church. The book is very practical and gives lots of food for thought.
In What's Best Next, Perman develops a gospel-centered understanding of productivity. The second half of the book is a detailed plan on how to be more productive. There are lots of interesting ideas presented. John Piper calls the book "extraordinary." If you liked Getting Things Done, this book is better. I read it earlier this summer and was greatly helped.
A short book by C.J. Mahaney, one of my favorite authors. Football season is around the corner, so why not read a book on how not to waste your sports watching?
This biography of George Muller is the perhaps best book I've read in a number of years (and I'm not done with it yet). Not only is Muller's story one of an extraordinary life lived by faith, the biographer's ability to draw out theological principles and illustrate them in Muller's life sets this book apart from most Christian biographies. My faith has been lifted time after time by reading it. Brothers (and sisters), read good Christian biographies. If you don't know where to start, start here.
Books for Women
At my wife's recommendation, I read True Beauty this summer. The book is easy to read and convicting. As the title suggests, Mahaney exposes the lies that our culture tells women about beauty and examines the Scriptures for the true standard of beauty. There's no list of "do's" and "don'ts", just practical principles from God's Word to help women be wise about all aspects of beauty. This book will be liberating for many women. Highly recommended.
Gloria Furman is fast becoming a favorite author. This is a book for moms, especially of young children. Furman aims to strengthen moms' faith in a series of loosely connected, easy to read chapters. It would be especially helpful for moms who feel overwhelmed.
MacArthur'sTwelve Extraordinary Women is a character study of women in the Bible that God powerfully used in redemptive history. God loves women and this book gives encouraging examples of God's interaction with women and his intimate care throughout biblical history.
